Funeral services for Robert Jefferson McCurley, 93, of DeRidder. LA will be held at 2pm Monday, December 30, 2024, at Texas Avenue Baptist Church in DeRidder. Pastor Darryl Hoychick will be officiating with burial to follow in Newlin Cemetery under the care of Myers-Colonial Funeral Home.
Robert McCurley (R.J.) passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2024. He was born April 22, 1931, in Evans, Louisiana.
R.J. was the most loving and devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather. He enjoyed watching the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers baseball. He and his wife liked to go on vacation every year. They had a camper and have visited many places throughout the United States.
R.J. was born in Evans, LA and served in the Army. He lived in Houston, TX for over 40 years. He was a member of Temple Oaks Baptist Church in Houston for many years. R.J. served as a deacon, he taught a young boys Sunday School class and was also a teacher for the Royal Ambassadors (RAs), boys in grades 1-6 that helped them develop a Christian worldview.
He worked for the railroad and then went to barber school to become a barber. He owned his own barber shop for many years in Houston. He worked as a machine operator in the iron industry at Cooper Industries and retired at the age of 62.
He attended Texas Avenue Baptist Church in DeRidder.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen Lavelle and son-n-law, Kenneth: two grandsons, Jeremy Coffman and wife, Donna and Nicholas Lavelle; along with many nieces and nephews.
