M. Ray “Booger” Blackwell, 59, of Fairhope AL, passed from this life on Saturday, March 26, 2022.


Ray loved the “Cowboy” life. He has participated in 1870’s era cowboy reenactments at various festivals across the South for the past nineteen years. He collected cowboy memorabilia of all kinds.  Joyce said that he would have loved the fact that he was the first person to be laid to rest in the “Cowboy” cowhide casket at Myers Colonial Funeral Home. “Booger” was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.


Those left to cherish his memory are his loving companion of nineteen years, Joyce Griffis of Fairhope, AL; children, India Blackwell of Aurora, MO and her daughters, Zayleigh, Bayleigh, Kayleigh; Roger Blackwell of Fairhope, AL and his daughter, Emma; Karen Moore and Mark of Daphne, AL and their sons, Reilly and Colston; Michael Griffis and Shawn of Seminole, FL; sister, Billie Rife and her daughters, April and Makayla, sister, Kim Shelton and Lee and their children, Mandi Westdyke and Jeremy, along with their children, Dillon, Addie, Lexi and her children, Nico and Callie, Cliff Shelton and Shannon and their children, Bailey, Avery, Caden, Le’Ann Dane and Alan, Stephen Shelton and his children, Braelyn and Isaac; aunt, Barbara Henderson and a host of cousins and close friends, including the people of the town of Merryville, LA.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Blackwell and Lillian and Nathan Hunter and his grandparents.


Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, LA and Thursday, March 31, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman, TX. A graveside service and burial will be held Friday, April 1, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Friendship Cemetery in Sherman, TX.  Pastor Alexandria Geovanni will officiate the Louisiana service and Brother Morgan Malone will officiate the Texas service.
