Mary Victoria St. Romain
Sunrise May 6, 1931 – Sunset February 6, 2021
Mary Victoria St. Romain entered into eternal rest on February 6, 2021 at the age of 89. She was born on May 6, 1931 in Mansura, Louisiana to Julius and Pauline (Sampson) Batiste. She met and later wed Clarence St. Romain on September 24, 1950. Together, they raised 11 children and celebrated a total of 58 years of marriage.
Mary loved her Heavenly Father and faithfully attended mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeRidder, Louisiana. Her services to God include: Catechism School (CCD) teacher for 30 years and Eucharist Minister. She was also a member of Come Lord Jesus, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Knights of Columbus Lady Auxiliary, Adoration, Rosary Group, and Alter Society. During a portion of Mary’s life, she visited the jailhouse and nursing home with a few of her children to pray with the inmates and elderly. While her husband, Clarence, was alive, the couple would often attend ACT Retreats to grow closer together and closer to God. Mary’s life work includes: domestic worker, bartender, waitress, Louisiana State Driver for the deaf and blind, and devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed people and believed in caring for them, and it was evident by her daily activities.
Mary enjoyed the age-old art of card playing and became proficient at the modern game of bingo. These activities were a source of good fun and an opportunity to talk and laugh with family and friends. Mary often hosted card games at her home; those in attendance would include: Mary Lee, Margarette (Nap), Mary (Mert), Eloise, Cynthia and Billy. Dorothy Mae would attend but would not play. These women would gather on Fridays and Sundays, rotating to each other’s home for good fun.
Mary is proceeded in death by her father, Julius Batiste; mother, Pauline (Sampson) Batiste; brothers, Paul Batiste and John Batiste; sisters, Margarett Sullivan and Mary Inez McZeal; husband, Clarence St. Romain; and sons, Theodore St. Romain (went to heaven at 11 months) and Karl Bernard St. Romain (Martha).
