It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Lou Hughes Keeling, a beloved wife, mother, and friend, who left us on March 25, 2025. Born on March 12, 1944, in Grand Falls, NB, Canada, Mary Lou spent her life as a beacon of warmth and kindness.
Mary Lou dedicated many years of her career as a clerical typist for civil service, all while accompanying her husband, Billy, on his military journey. No matter where they were stationed, she embraced each new community with open arms, becoming a mother figure to many. She had a way of making everyone feel at home, always there to provide support or a listening ear.
Her family was everything to her, and she was not only a wonderful mom to her children, but also a "decent" cook who loved to whip up comforting meals. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing and crocheting, but as the years passed, she found joy in watching the Food Network and HGTV, dreaming up her next project around the house. If you ever spotted her outdoors, you'd likely find her mowing the lawn or tending to her beautiful flower beds, which she took great pride in.
Mary Lou was a committed member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and actively participated in the Come Lord Jesus group. Her faith and love for her community shone bright in everything she did.
Mary Lou leaves behind her loving husband of fifty-six years, Billy John Keeling of DeRidder, LA; her son, John Keeling of DeRidder, LA, daughter, Sister Vincent Marie of Nashville, TN; sister, Marlene Dionne of Grand Falls, Canada and a host of other family and friends. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of so many, and she will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Martha Hughes; brother, Don Hughes.
To honor Mary Lou's life and spirit, a public viewing will take place at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, LA on Monday, March 31, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM. A Rosary will follow at 10:30 AM, leading into a Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 12:10 PM. Father Wayne LeBleu will officiate the service. After the Mass, she will be laid to rest in Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Leesville, LA at 1:30 PM.
