Marjorlena Christine Hawthorne Chopfield

d. November 10, 2023

Marjorlena Christine (Hawthorne) Chopfield, 73, of Merryville, La, passed away from this life on Friday, November 10, 2023.

Affectionately known as, “Margie”, to her family and friends, she was born on April 3, 1950, in Newton, TX to Levy and Pearlie Hawthorne. She was the youngest of her six siblings. She graduated from Newton High School in 1968. She then went on to attend Tyler Barber College, in Tyler, Tx., where she obtained her barber license. She met and married Lawrence Chopfield, Sr. on March 23, 1979.

Margie was a beautiful, kind and loving soul. She never met a stranger or judged anyone. She believed in helping those in need, because her motto to live by was “Love is the key”. She instilled positivity and confidence in her children – encouraging them to know that they could do anything in life if they kept God first in their heart. She made each one of her children feel as if they were her favorite. She loved to dance, read, watch old westerns, tend to her plants, cook large meals for her family, and check in on her friends and coworkers. Her infectious laugh was contagious. She loved to laugh and did not want to see anyone upset or sad. She loved to brag about her grandsons, Martell Jr. and Markell Hawthorne – who were the joy of her life. She always mentioned how proud she was of them and how much she enjoyed having the opportunity to watch them play football or just to come visit and eat all her food that she especially prepared for them. She faithfully read her Bible every day, she had a passion for God, and talked and prayed to Him daily. There was not a day that passed by that she didn’t say, “Thank My God in Heaven for everything.”

Margie had a very hard work ethic. She held various jobs such as driving the school bus for Newton ISD, working long hours at the Kirby Lumber Mill, raising half the kids in Newton, TX as a babysitter and caregiver, but her most enjoyable job was working at the nursing home where she built long lasting friendships with her coworkers, in Merryville, La.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, Levy and Pearlie Hawthorne, her beloved sister, Darline Forward of Inglewood, Ca., her dearest brothers, Joe Edward Hawthorne, Leroy Ben Hawthorne, Newton, TX; and Ben “Harvey” Hawthorne of Colorado Springs, Co; and her precious youngest son, Lawrence Chopfield, Jr., of Merryville, La.

Margie leaves to cherish her devoted husband of 44 years, Lawrence Chopfield, Sr., her children – Ronald Hawthorne of Jasper, TX; Brittany Hawthorne of Lake Charles, La; Martell Hawthorne (Michelle) of Lake Charles, La; and Le Quita Chopfield of Merryville, La. Her siblings – Evelyn Crockett of Chicago, Il; and Howard R. Hawthorne (Ella Joyce) of Newton, TX. 8 grandchildren, 20 great – grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved as if they were her own.
