Mrs. Meadows went to be with her Lord on February 1, 2009 at the Merryville Nursing Center. She was a native of Merryville and had lived there all of her life. In 1932 she graduated from Merryville High School. Then she attended Louisiana State Normal College (now Northwestern State University) and became a teacher. When she retired in 1976, she had taught second grade in the Beauregard Parish School system for 42 years. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. Also, she was a member of the Beauregard Parish Retired Teachers Association, the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, and Kappa Kappa Iota, an honorary sorority of educators. She was a life member of the Priscilla Chapter #58 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Other organizations that she was active in, and a charter member of, were the Merryville Cemetery Association, the Merryville Historical Society, and the Merryville High School Alumni Association. She loved her family and friends and took great pride in her former students. Teaching and Merryville High School were her life. She enjoyed working in her yard and growing flowers, doing counted cross-stitch and other needlework, reading, and visiting her family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emmett A. Meadows, her parents Erastus Cole and Tressie Kearney Cole, and seven older brothers and sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Meadows Greene and husband Jim of Indianapolis, Indiana; two grandsons, Mike Greene and wife Kelly of Greenwood, Indiana and Tom Greene and wife Liqun of Westminster, Colorado; and five great-grandchildren, Alex, Danielle, Nick, lan, and Eli Greene. She also has ten surviving nieces and nephews and numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Mike Greene, Tom Greene, Alex Greene, Tom Dixon, David Eaves, Bruce Havens, Dennis (Roonie) Powell, and Mance Stark. Honorary pallbearers are Ron Nance and Larry Karr. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at the Merryville Nursing Center for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Meadows during her stay there. We are most grateful to our dear friends - Ellen Terrell, Linda Jeans, Alice Molbert, Sylvia Doyle, and Shirley Cooper - who have lovingly cared for Mother recently and over the past years.
