Lisa Kay Benton passed away December 9, 2016, after a brave battle with metastatic breast cancer. Lisa was born August 27, 1961, to Jackie Lamar and Sharon Bradbury Benton in Dothan, Alabama.
After graduating from Tara High School in Baton Rouge in 1979, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Northeastern Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana at Monroe) in 1982. She went on to complete a Master of Science degree in School Psychology in 1984 at University of Southern Mississippi. She married and was blessed with two wonderful children. Lisa worked as a School Psychologist for Beauregard Parish Schools for over 30 years until she retired in May, 2016. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and successfully completed aggressive treatment. In early 2016, Lisa discovered that her cancer had recurred and she again demonstrated the strength for which she was known, bravely fighting the disease until finally passing away peacefully in her sleep at home surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both of whom also died of cancer. Lisa is survived by her two brothers, Steve and Brad, and their families; children Michael Benton O’Neill and Corinne Emily O’Neill; Michael’s wife, Sarah, and their three children, Chance, Laela and Lilly Kay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lisa’s name to the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at 2:00 pm at Myers Colonial Funeral Home.
