Joseph Henry Harris, Sr.

On February 28, 2023, Brother Joseph Henry Harris, Sr. answered the Master’s call and made his earthly, peaceful departure at home in Murfreesboro, TN at the age of 95. He was born September 9, 1927 in Natchez, LA to Silas Harris and Clara Johnson. At an early age the family relocated to Deridder and Joseph enrolled in the Beauregard Training School where he was educated. Joseph then served in the Army of the United States 2 years from 1950-1952, where he was Honorably discharged from active duty, ranking as a Staff Sergeant. Later he was employed with the DeRidder Cleaners and went on to work Civil Service in Fort Polk, LA where he retired.

Baptized at an early age at Starlight Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. K.E. Robinson, he continued his spiritual growth under Rev. Daniel Stafford. He was spiritually nurtured in the Men’s Sunday School class, participated in both male and adult choir, and also served many years as a deacon. In the community, he was always encouraging, lending a helping hand, and reaching out to those in need. He found great joy in playing dominoes with friends and loved working in the yard to ensure it was well-manicured at all times.

Joseph was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Seymore Harris.

He leaves to cherish his memory, six sons, Donald (FloraDon) Harris, Bernard (Brenda) Harris, Minister Kenneth (Denise) Harris, Joseph (Rhonda) Harris, Jr., Michael (Danilo Garcia) Harris, Jason Harris; four daughters, Verdell Silas (James) Williams, Clara (Preston, Jr.) Williams, Robin (Phillip) Forde, Clarice (TaRiccus, Sr.) Martin and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, God-children, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 10, 2023 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 12:00 PM at Starlight Baptist Church in DeRidder, LA. Reverend Daniel Stafford will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Burial will follow at Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, LA.
