Johnny Nelson Hickman

d. October 9, 2022

Johnny Nelson Hickman, 81, of DeRidder passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022 at a local hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Beauregard Parish born February 22, 1941 to the Reverend Kermit and Gloria Mae Nelson. Her love for the Lord started at a young age as she traveled with her father to sing and play the piano. She met the love of her life, Harvey Hickman, at the age of 17, but her father forbid them to date, so she would only see him at church. With the help of H.B. and Ruth Hickman, the two eloped and were married on August 8, 1958.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren referred to her as the “Keeper of the Magic Stove.” She always welcomed her family and friends with delicious sweet treats and coffee. No one ever left her home hungry. She was known for her honest truths of telling it like it was whether you wanted to hear it or not.

A lady of faith, she was a Member of the Gospel Lighthouse Pentecostal Church in DeRidder. She was active in the church youth groups and choir. She was a true Prayer Warrior that will be greatly missed by all. She served God until her last breath.

Preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Kermit and Gloria Nelson; sisters, Louise Hall and Wilma Marriott.

Survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Harvey Hickman; sons, Alton “Sam” Hickman and Jimmy “Shorty” Hickman and wife Victoria, all of DeRidder; daughter, Cristi Cobb of Extension; brother, Herbert Nelson and wife Sharon of Merryville, sister, Tanga Morgan and husband Travis of Singer; seven grandchildren, Suzanne Hickman, Chase Hickman and wife Julie, Leah Campbell and husband Daniel, Allen Crowell and wife Natalie, Toni Hickman, Chance Bond, Kaycee Hickman; 13 great- grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
