We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of JoAnn "Jodie" Gust Odom, who left us on March 9, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on January 4, 1944, in Houston, TX, JoAnn lived a life full of hard work and laughter before calling DeRidder, LA, her home in 2013.
Jodie proudly served for nearly 20 years as a Water Plant Supervisor for the City of Houston, making sure that her fellow Houstonians had fresh, clean drinking water every single day. She took on the job with dedication, climbing towers and checking levels, all while bringing her unique spirit to the role.
After her move to DeRidder, Jodie embraced new challenges in her life, facing them with her signature positivity. She made a special friend and neighbor in Ann Standridge, who she affectionately referred to as "Ms. MacGyver" for always having just the right tools. Their outings for lunch and shopping brought joy and laughter to Jodie's life.
JoAnn had a zest for living, particularly when it came to traveling. She loved going on cruises with her best friend, Margaret, where they created cherished memories and shared many laughs.
Jodie is survived by her daughter, Debbie Kay Istre; her niece, Michele Merryman Crain and husband, Steven; and her best friend who was also family, Margaret Phillips, who will dearly miss her.
Jodie was preceded in death by her parents, George and Othell Gust; sister, Joyce Gust Renken and husband, John Renken.
A public viewing will be held at Myers Colonial Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather and honor the remarkable life of JoAnn G. Odom. Afterward, she will be laid to rest in a burial ceremony at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery in Houston, TX.
Jodie's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her-a true gem who made the world a brighter place.
