Herman Lowell Bennett was born November 19, 1937, in Merryville (Junction Community), LA to Carl and Florence Powell Bennett. He went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at the age of 84.


Herman was born the same year that Calvary Baptist Church was established, he was saved in November of 1948 at his beloved Calvary Baptist Church where he later served as Music Director, Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher.


He graduated from Merryville High School in 1956 and joined the Navy in July of that same year. He married his beautiful bride, Marie LeJeune on August 20, 1960. In 1963, he graduated from McNeese State University with a BS degree in Business Administration, before going to work for Wisdom Moving and Storage (Agent for Allied Van Lines) as an accountant. Herman went to work at Fort Polk in 1964 for the Department of Army in Finance and Accounting, later in 1966 he moved to Civilian Personnel Office, where he worked in areas of Recruitment and Placement, Training and Development, Personnel Management, Position and Pay Management. He worked at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA in 1973 and at Health Education and Welfare in Dallas in 1974. He returned to Fort Polk and retired in 1985 as Deputy Personnel Manager.


Herman was very active in the community, serving on the MHS Athletic Association, the Hospital Board and the District Water Board.


Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of sixty-one years, Marie L. Bennett of Merryville, LA; son, Byron Bennett and Kathy of Merryville, LA; daughter, Carla Sittig and Chad of Newbern, NC; brother, Bruce Bennett and Melonee; sister, Laverne Bennett Townsley; sisters-in-law, Mildred Bennett, Barbara Bennett; uncle, Elmer Bennett; aunt, Nell Bennett Cryer; grandchildren, Joel Bennett, Hannah Bennett Johnston and Kyle; Cody Sittig and Sydney, Camryn Sittig, Laura Mattlock and Billy, Douglas Parker and Ashley, Michael Castle; great grandchildren, Ethan Parker, Gavin Mattlock, Kinsley Mattlock and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Florence Bennett; brothers, Carl E. Bennett, Jr., Max Arnold Bennett and wife Betty, also his previous wife, Arlene; brother-in-law, George Townley.


He is also survived and preceded in death by members of the MHS Class of 1956.


Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 26, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church in Junction, LA. Visitation will continue at 8:30 AM until the time of service at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 27, 2021, also at Calvary Baptist Church. Brother Jim Miers, Brother Hardy Estes and Bruce Bennett will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Cody Sittig, Camryn Sittig, Joel Bennett, Tony Bennett, Damon Townsley, Donald Bennett. Honorary Pallbearer will be Troy Bryant. Burial will follow at Cannon Cemetery in Merryville, LA.


The family wishes to express a special thank you to Heart of Hospice for their caring and compassionate service, especially, nurse, Alex; aide, Ashley and Chaplain, Alex Geovanni.
