Elsie Louise Lum Kelly, 91, of Conroe, TX, passed from this life on Friday, March 24, 2023.


Born in Patroon, TX on March 11, 1932, she graduated from Newton High School where she was a standout basketball player. She married her husband Carroll & often traveled with him during his time as a long distance truck driver until their children were born. She never met a stranger, had an outgoing personality & loved to make people laugh. She was a fabulous cook, especially her shrimp gumbo, chicken & dumplings & banana pudding. She enjoyed tending her flower beds & had a green thumb with her beautiful geraniums & lilies. She was a lover of animals who rescued baby rabbits, abandoned dogs & a kitten, bringing them into her home to join her beloved dog Sug. After many years as Secretary to the Registrar at the local college, she retired to care for her husband & elderly mother in the family home. She was a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church & a loving wife & mother who adored her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren.


Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Shelia Steffler and Charles R. Steffler of Conroe, TX, Patti Lifland and Dr. Howard Lifland of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Cole Steffler and Brianna of Pipe Creek, TX, Sara Steffler of Conroe, TX, Lauren Lifland Glick and Matthew of Brooklyn, NY, Leah Byrd and Joshua of Lexington, SC, Ryan Lifland and Laura of Charlotte, NC; six great grandchildren and one on the way and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Kelly; parents, Earl and Alline Lum; brother, Hershel Lum; grandson, Charles Realph Steffler, Jr.


Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in Deridder, LA. A graveside funeral will be at 11:30 AM at Quicksand Cemetery in Newton, TX, also on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Brother Hurshel Davis will officiate the service with readings by Brother Paul Moore.  Pallbearers will be family and friends. Burial will follow at Quicksand Cemetery in Newton, TX.
