Dr. Henry S. Carter, 94, of DeRidder, LA, passed from this life on Sunday, March 20, 2022.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Mary Alice Carter of DeRidder, LA; son, Henry “Hank” Carter, Jr. and Sherrie of Wichita Falls, TX; daughters, Martha Pollard and Rod of DeRidder, LA, Susan Smith and Brad of DeRidder, LA, Mary Jean Butaud and Chris of Bothell, WA; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mattie George Carter; brother John Thomas; sister-in-law, Frances Carter.
Henry was born in Newton, Mississippi., in 1927. After high school, he graduated from Mississippi College and Tulane University School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years, after completing internship and residency in Shreveport, LA.
In 1953, he married Mary Alice, and in 1957 they moved to DeRidder at the request of long-time friends, Lu and Jean Brown, and Henry became a partner with Dr. Brown at DeRidder Clinic; this partnership lasted until 1981. In 1979, Henry completed an Internal Medicine residency at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. He opened Internal Medicine Clinic in 1981, where he was joined in practice by Dr. Mahesh Pandya in 1982. In 2004, Henry left Internal Medicine Clinic and opened his solo practice, from which he retired in 2013. He continued on staff at Beauregard Memorial Hospital until June, 2021, keeping his medical license current until the time of his death.
Henry used his God-given skills as he ministered through many opportunities in Mexico and Central America. In 2007, he successfully led the community in establishing and operating the Beauregard Agape Community Clinic, to provide care for the working uninsured; this is a continuing ministry. Henry served on administrative boards of Dry Creek Baptist Encampment, Louisiana College, Baptist Medical and Dental Mission International, and he considered this meaningful service.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at First Baptist Church of DeRidder, located at 2030 Highway 171. Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 25, 2022, also at First Baptist Church. Pastors Steve Graves, Lynn Clayton, and Jerry Masters will officiate the service. A private interment for the family will be held after the service.
