Berry Webster West

November 3, 1925 - March 18, 2014

Berry Webster West, 88, of DeRidder, LA, passed from this life on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 in Platte City, MO.  Mr. West was in the Navy for 2 ½ years and is a WWII Veteran.  He graduated from Southern College of Fine Arts in Houston, TX where  he majored in Music.  He taught band at Austin State School for 3 years before returning to live in DeRidder.  He worked at Fort Polk for 2 years as a Carpenter’s Apprentice before beginning work at the Deridder Post Office.  He was a Letter Carrier for 30 years, walking 9 to 19 miles a day, delivering mail in the city.  His hobbies were reading, gardening (40 lb cabbage), pecan trees, fruit trees, and raising chickens, emu, geese, ducks, turkeys, goats and a calf or two.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Eddie Ruth West; daughters, Ann Rozell and husband Grant of Chandler, TX and Evangeline Hicks and husband Kirk of Platte City, MO; granddaughters, Heather Icenogle, Angie Roberts, Amy Maggard, and Laurie Rozell; great granddaughter, Destinee Roberts.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Maggie West; sisters, Vergie West Lewis and Vertie West; brothers, Obadiah, James F. and Frank West.

Visitation and funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Myers-Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, LA.  Visitation will be from 2:00pm until 3:00pm with funeral service beginning at 3:00pm.  Burial will follow in Cooper Cemetery in DeRidder.  Bro. Hurshel Davis will officiate.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pine Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, 1061 Pine Ridge Rd. DeRidder, LA.
