Aslomia Faye Glaspie

d. September 13, 2023

Aslomia Faye Glaspie, 89, of Merryville, LA, passed from this life on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

Aslomia Glaspie was born on June 29, 1934, in Bon Wier Tx to William Nelson, Sr. and Nerecy Nelson. She was joined in holy matrimony to John Glaspie in Houston, TX, and to this union six children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Glaspie; daughter, Cheryl Lynn Glaspie; her siblings, Alberta Powell (John) Roy Lee Nelson, (Ernestine); Mable Lean Samuel (Grant), Naomi Nelson.

Aslomia affectionately, known as Faye, and Mrs. Glaspie, by her students, was a resident of Merryville, LA.  She grew up attending Freedonia Baptist Church, and as an adult she was a member of Biloxi, Church of Christ. She graduated from what is now Biloxi High School, where she received a scholarship to Prairie View A & M University. She was first and foremost, a devoted and loving wife and mother, and an educator. She loved seeing and spending time with her children, and she loved having the grandkids’ vacation at her home during the summer months. She loved and was loved by faculty, staff, and students at Merryville High School, where she was the school Librarian and Teachers Assistant. She was always happy to see her students and she would encourage and instruct them not only concerning school, but also about life and living. Even after retirement from the school system, her former students called her to say thank you, and if they happened upon her they would show her their affection and their gratefulness for how she impacted their lives.

Aslomia was excited to plan and plant her vegetable garden, and her annual flowers. Every Sunday was a very special day for her attending Sunday worship service with her family and friends. After service she would spend the day with her beloved brother, William, her sisters Catherine, and Mable, as well as their children, and grandchildren. Oftentimes they sat under the tree or on the porch eating Sunday dinner, drinking coffee, laughing, and reminiscing about their days of growing up. Her family loved and appreciated the straight-forward love she provided always. She was always excited and looked forward to fishing with her brother, William, her sisters, Alberta, and Mable. She also enjoyed discussing current events and politics with her sister Elmarine and her friends. She was an avid reader and studied her bible diligently every day. She also enjoyed various types of puzzles, mainly her word find puzzles.

Aslomia Glaspie leaves to cherish precious memory five loving children, Beverly Harris of San Antonio, TX, Gwendolyn Traylor of Cincinnati, OH, Allan Glaspie (Petula) of Lake Charles, LA, Johnny Glaspie (Mary) of Jasper, TX; and Bonnie Jackson (Alexander) of Helotes, TX; one brother, William Nelson, Jr. (Catherine) of Bon Wier, TX, Elmarine Kellum (James – deceased) of Jasper, TX; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 11:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, LA. Brother William Nelson, Jr. will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Burial will follow at Merryville Community Cemetery in Merryville, LA.
