Alan Paul Dunbar, 75, died at home with his family around him on June 21, 2021. He was born March 16, 1946, in Houma Louisiana, the son of Thomas John Dunbar Sr. and Norma Mathilda Thibodaux Dunbar.
Alan graduated from Thibodaux High School, Class of 1964. Following graduation, he served 2 years in the U.S Army during the Vietnam war. After his service he returned home and attended Nichols State University, graduating in 1975 with a BA in Business Administration.
Alan married Joan Marie Hildago in 1969. They celebrated 51 years of marriage in January. In 1977, they moved to Deridder, Louisiana so that Alan could join the staff of Lamar Salter Technical College in Leesville where he was a business instructor and then later a guidance counselor. In 2003, Alan retired from Lamar Salter Technical College after 26 years of helping others with their higher educational needs. Alan was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Jude Catholic Church. Alan was a Eucharistic minister and served his Church well. Alan, along with his wife Joan, taught Natural Family Planning within the Diocese of Lake Charles for 22 years. Alan enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, hunting and was a jack of all trades. Alan was a member of the Master Gardener’s Association.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his daughter Sharon Anne Dunbar and his brother Thomas John Dunbar Jr. Surviving in addition to his wife, daughters; Karin Dunbar Gary and her husband James of Navarre Florida, Denise Dunbar Doyle and her husband Todd of Pitkin Louisiana , sons; Robert Dunbar and his wife Dawn of Deridder Louisiana, Daniel Dunbar and his wife Sheila of Deridder Louisiana; brother, Patrick Dunbar and his wife Sandra of Houma Louisiana; grandchildren, Samantha, Thomas, Lesleigh, Ethan, Nathan, Brendan, Daniel (DJ), Desire, Andre, Abigail, Emma, Justin, Dylan, Caleb; great grandchildren Jeffery, Oliver, Stella, Bella Rea.
Visitation will be held at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in Deridder, LA, on Thursday June 24, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A rosary will be said at 7pm. Visitation will continue Friday, June 25 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM also at Myers Colonial Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Deridder, LA at 12:10 PM. Alan will be moved to Thibodaux Funeral Home in Thibodaux Louisiana. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 26, 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM followed by a graveside service at Saint Bridget Catholic Church Cemetery in Schriever Louisiana at 1:00 PM.
